NEW TO A CINEMA NEAR YOU: THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW

Global warming has caused the fresh water/salt water balance in the ocean to go haywire - and as a result, the tides have changed. Because of this imbalance, the world's weather goes a bit mental. The first sign of this shift is the massive hailstorm that hits Japan - and you thought that hail storm in Ballarat ten years ago was bad. These things are HUGE - the size of basketballs. From here, we are shown the complete destruction of LA because of massive tornados ripping through the city. Temperatures in Europe drop so badly that anyone outside freezes instantly. Helicopters fall from the sky, and the whole continent is covered in ice.

Starring Jake Gyllenhaal (who is very good for a perve) and miscellaneous other unimportant (and much less spunky) people, this is definitely one of the most advanced special effects movies of all time. The wolves shown in one part of the film are not even real wolves - they are digital (word is, they couldn't get real wolves to be nasty enough, so they 'invented' some nasty wolves of their own). These are done so well that you wouldn't know they were fake (I cheated and watched The Making Of). Cities are turned to ice and snow with the power of digital enhancement - but it's so real it's scary.

Sure, the plot is a little flawed in some spots (a lot of technological gobbledygook to make it sound really technical), and it (of course) contains the expected love story between two of the main characters, but the special effects make the film worthwhile.

Definitely one for the big screen - if you wait til DVD, you'll be disappointed.
